One challenge associated with tying large salt or freshwater patterns is the amount of material needed to produce a full lively looking profile.  For durability materials are often doubled over and stacked.   Many tier's struggle while tying large patterns to create a clean realistic-looking head.  The most common approach is to tie off the head cover it with epoxy, glue on some eyes. and add more epoxy.  The result is time consuming and messy.  



The folks at Flymen Fishing Company invented the Fish Skull as an answer to the problems of messy and time consuming streamer and bait fish heads.  This is how it works:


Tie the pattern as normal leaving a little extra room at the head of the fly.  Once the body of the fly is complete you simply apply some glue or head cement behind the eye, slip the Fish Skull over the eye, and wrap a few turns of thread in front of the Fish Skull to keep it in place.  The process takes only seconds and the results look far better than any epoxied fly.


The Fish Skull has slots along top and bottom of the rear portion to accommodate large profile patterns without compressing the fibers.  Additionally, the metal head protects the material tie in point so the fly become more durable and resistant to the teeth of large predatory fish.  The profile of the Fish Skull pushes a lot of water and the sides mimic gill plates.  Fish Skulls do add a bit of weight to the fly, but they are very light relative to their size.  The added weight is just enough to generate a "jigging" action but does not cause the fly to dive to the bottom or ride head down in the current.



Fish Skulls come in a number of different sizes and colors.  You can even take a marker to them for a custom appearance.  It is with good reason that Fish Skulls won the Dealers Choice Award!  They are the most innovative steamer/bait fish product to hit the market since synthetic materials.
