 American Saddle Clumps

In the last year I have been tying a lot of tube flies.  Apart from the tubes themselves, classic patterns for tube flies often call for a number of materials that outside of the standard fare.  I have always like the look of Intruder flies and what really sets the pattern apart are the long narrow dyed grizzly tips that run along the outside framing the silhouette.  After tying a few flies with dry fly hackle or wide saddle hackles I started looking for an inexpensive source for long, narrow, high quality hackles.  Hareline's American Saddle Clumps are a perfect fit.

The American Saddle Clumps come in both grizzly and single color configurations.  The long feathers are also great for woolly buggers and can accent just about any steamer pattern.  Lately for large bait fish patterns I have been using the American Saddle Clumps to create a subtle lateral line.  All you have to do is tie in the lower material on the bottom of the hook and then tie in a grizzly feather on top of the hook facing backward.  Then to finish the fly simply add the upper body material.  When the fly gets wet the grizzly fiber forms a barred line running the full length of the body.  It looks incredible and the narrow feathers of the Saddle Clumps add just the right amount of contrast without fouling the hook or interfering with the movement of the fly.

Each pack of American Saddle Clumps comes with two saddle sections.  One long and one short.  The feathers range in length from 3-7 inches I have used them to dress flies from 4/0-8.  Hareline's American Saddle Clumps are a great choice when you need a quality hackle but don't want to purchase a large saddle.  The colors are great and at less than $10 a pack you can't find a higher quality hackle anywhere!
