Pro-Tubes Review

Pro-Tubes are different from any tubes I have previously tied on.  Pro-Tubes are injection molded and by design simplify the construction of tube flies.  Instead of inserting a liner tube into a plastic or metal housing, melting the ends, and then attaching the junction tubing; Pro-Tubes are a "all-in-one" product.  The Flexitube system is a one piece injection molded tube that consists of both a surface to tie on and the junction connector all in one.  For smaller flies Pro-Tube offers micro-tubes that have detachable junction tubing which allows the hook to hang loose.  Here is how the Pro-Tube system works:

Flexitubes

Flexitubes come in three sizes are offered in five colors (clear, black, orange, cyan blue, and pink).  To start simply select the color and size tube appropriate for a particular fly.  Flexitubes can be custom cut before or after tying so a single size tube will cover almost the full spectrum of flies.

Tubes can be mounted with either the Pro Tying Needle (the Pro Tying Needle does an excellent job of keeping the tube from spinning) or a tube fly attachment.

Once the tube is in place simply tie the fly on the front of the tube.

Slip on a cone head, cut the front of the tube to length, and melt the tip with a lighter.  Done.  The junction tubing is already in place and you can custom trim it to length.  There is no liner tubing, no separate junction tubing to mess with.  Simple and quick!

The Pro-Tube system cones are available in a nice range of colors and materials including softdiscs (pliable plastic), sonicdisk (softdiscs with holes), and conediscs (metal).

To ensure your fly drifts properly you can customize your tubes by adding weights.  The Pro Tube weight system includes tubes and heads that slip on the tubes and can be tied over to balance out your fly.
Pro Tubes also offers micro-tubes for tying small patterns.  micro-tube are injection molded like Flexitubes only they come with a removable section of junction tubing.  micro-tubes are perfect for trout streamers or small spey flies.  The junction tubing is very soft and allows the hook to be adjusted.

By tying a woolly bugger on a tube you can drastically improve hookups by using a much shorter hook

In sum: The genius of the Pro-Tube system is in its simplicity.  The flexitubes are a true, "all-in-one" tube and there is no need to mess around with separate liner tubing and junction tubing.  The micro-tubes are quick and simple to work with and the separate junction tubing offers a range of versatility for smaller flies.  The sonicdiscs are unique and can add huge movement to a wing even in thin water.  Pro-Tubes are great for someone looking to give tubes a try but are a bit intimidated by the complexity of other tube systems.  The range of sizes, colors, weights, and cone heads also make Pro-Tubes a great choice for the seasoned tube fly tier.
