Hareline: Spey Plumes

Hareline Dubbing, Inc.

Hareline Dubbing, Inc. needs no introduction.  What started off on a kitchen stove top and a dozen colors of dubbing has grown into a company that now offers thousands of fly tying products.  Hareline Dubbing gathers materials from around the world and is constantly on the edge of development testing new products and making old products better.  Walk into any fly shop and and you won't have to look long before the name Hareline Dubbing is in front of you.

Spey Plumes

Spey Plumes are soft flexible mini ostrich feathers.  From butt to tip they range in size from 3-5 inches and the herl measures from 1-2 inches in length.  They come ten in a pack and with most feathers, depending how you are using them, will tie at least two flies.  If you are using a Magic Tool, then you can up to four flies per feather.

The upper stems of the feathers are incredibly thin and can be wrapped without stripping.  As you move down the stem you can easily split the feathers to make wrapping easier or to thin out the herl.

Finally, as previously mentioned, you can use a Magic Tool to blend colors and customize the length of the herl.

In addition to being easy to tie with and looking great.  Hareline's Spey Plumes come in twenty-four colors.  All the usual suspects are there: Black, Purple, Olive, Chartreuse, Medium Dun, etc... But Hareline has included some interesting additions, which include: Flamingo Red, Sunburst Yellow, Kingfisher Blue, Ginger, Shrimp Pink, Green Highlander, and Heron Grey.

Spey Plumes are traditionally used on tube flies as seen in the work of internationally renowned tier Michael Frodin.  The use of Spey Plumes, however, is not limited to tubes.  You can add colorful collars to streamers, blend the herl with marabou, pull off individual strands to make tails or add a subtle amount of color to a wing.  You can even wrap nymph bodies with single strand or a blend of colors.  Spey Plumes are inexpensive and can really add a lot of movement and color to a pattern.

Disclosure- Hareline provided the featured products free of charge for me to review. I was not compensated in any other way for this blog post.
