Wet Fly Ways DVD

There are some things that just cannot be communicated well through books.  After reading half a dozen books on fishing wet flies over the years it wasn't until I watched "Wet Fly Ways" that my wet fly game has seen dramatic improvements.  I don't mean to disparage books in anyway, there is just a natural limitation with the medium of the printed text that makes "how to" instruction second rate next to actually watching someone fish a wet fly correctly.  If you fish wet flies or are familiar with the literature then the name Davy Wotton will no doubt ring a bell.  Davy, native to Wales, has been teaching wet fly fishing for many years his skill and teaching techniques are second to none.  In his DVD Wet Fly Ways Davy explains the full spectrum of fishing wet flies including the following:

In Wet Fly Ways Davy takes you through some of the most popular and often misunderstood wet fly techniques and you can actually see stream-side how the various casts and manipulations of the flies work.  Davy explains that fishing wet flies successfully is not a passive cast and drift technique.  Instead imparting movement and retrieving line play and essential role in the traditional way of fishing these classic flies.   Additionally, Davy spends a good amount of time looking at both traditional and more modern wet flies and explains how he selects which flies to fish in a range of conditions and hatches.  He also explains his theory of arranging the flies on the leader and how the order of flies is just as important as how they are fished.  Finally, Davy takes you through how to set up your leader to avoid tangles and to ensure that your flies present properly.

In Sum: Wet Fly Ways is essential to understanding and actually learning to fish wet flies.  If you can't book a trip with Davy, then the next best thing is watching him rig flies, explain a number of casts, manipulate line, set up a leader, and explain common mistakes and assumptions about fishing wet flies. I wish I would have watched this video years ago.  It is a great companion to Dave Hughes' Wet Flies: Tying and Fishing Soft-Hackles, Winged and Wingless Wets and Fuzzy Nymphs.
